Why Does My Washing Machine Smell? Causes and Easy Fixes

A washing machine that comes out smelling worse than the laundry going in is a common complaint — especially with high-efficiency front-loaders. The musty, sour, or mildewy odor comes from trapped moisture, detergent residue, and mold or mildew growing in the places water lingers. Here’s how to clear it out and keep it from coming back.

Why it happens

High-efficiency machines use less water and seal tightly, so moisture stays inside after a cycle. Combine that with leftover detergent and fabric softener residue (a perfect food source for mold), a rubber door gasket with hidden folds, and a damp drum, and you get the classic washer smell. Top-loaders can develop it too, usually from residue and standing water in the tub or dispensers.

How to clear the smell

1. Run a hot tub-clean cycle. Use your machine’s “tub clean”/”clean washer” setting (or the hottest normal cycle) with a washing-machine cleaning tablet, or two cups of white vinegar, run empty.
2. Scrub the detergent drawer. Pull it out completely and wash away the slimy buildup; clean the cavity it slides into, too.
3. Clean the door gasket (front-loaders). Fold back the rubber boot and wipe out the hidden folds — this is where black mildew and gunk hide. A 50/50 vinegar-water spray helps.
4. Clean the drain-pump filter (front-loaders). Behind the small access panel at the lower front is a filter that traps lint, coins, and debris — a major source of odor and drainage trouble. Have a towel ready; some water will spill out.

Keep it from coming back

• Leave the door open between loads so the drum dries out.
• Use the right amount of HE detergent — too much leaves residue. More soap does not mean cleaner clothes.
• Don’t let wet laundry sit in the machine.
• Run a tub-clean cycle monthly.
