If your routine fridge checkups only consist of filling it full of groceries, then you may have the wrong approach. Your fridge runs continuously so it is wise to take a few minutes regularly to make sure that everything is in perfect running order to keep energy costs low and save yourself on costly repairs. Here is a guideline of some things to check when doing a fridge inspection.

1. Keep Level- If your fridge is not level, the doors may not close or seal properly, causing the motor to possibly strain. Using a leveler check your refrigerator’s position. Adjust the feet on the bottom of the fridge accordingly, if needed, to keep the unit even all four sides.

2. Keep it closed- Your mama was right! Keeping the door closed is the best way to maintain temperatures in your fridge. If the doors are not closed properly it can cause temps to rise leading to food spoilage.

3. Cover your food- Store food properly in Tupperware containers with secure tops, or covered tightly with foil or plastic wrap as this will help minimize moisture in your fridge.

4. Brighten it up– It may not seem that working light bulbs will make a big difference, but if you can’t see what you’re looking for inside your refrigerator, you may keep the door open longer causing it to not maintain proper temperatures.

5. Cool it down– Putting hot or steaming food in your fridge will raise the temperature of the unit and its contents, making it have to work harder to stabilize. While food safety is very important, take a few minutes to let hot items cool down before storing them properly in your refrigerator.

By setting aside a designated time every month to do these few quick and simple fridge checkups, you can be saving yourself lots of headache and anguish on costly refrigerator maintenance or repairs that could be caught in the early stages of failure, thus saving you TONS of money!
