Of every maintenance task in your home, cleaning the dryer vent might be the most important one people skip. A clogged vent doesn’t just make your dryer slow and expensive to run — according to the U.S. Fire Administration, clothes dryers cause thousands of house fires every year, and the leading cause is failure to clean them. The good news: clearing your vent is a straightforward job you can do in under an hour, twice a year.
Your dryer works by blowing hot air through wet clothes and pushing the moist, lint-filled air out through the vent. When lint builds up in the duct, that hot air has nowhere to go. The dryer overheats, the heating element and thermal components are stressed, and trapped lint — which is extremely flammable — can ignite. A blocked vent also forces the dryer to run two or three cycles to dry one load, wearing out parts faster and adding to your energy bill.
Use rigid or semi-rigid metal ducting rather than the thin foil/plastic accordion type — it traps far less lint and is safer. Keep the duct run as short and straight as possible. And if your laundry room is on a second floor or has a long duct run, consider a professional vent cleaning once a year.
If your clothes still dry slowly after a thorough vent cleaning, the problem is inside the dryer — usually a worn heating element, thermostat, or thermal fuse. Those are common, affordable repairs. See our dryer repair-or-replace guide, and if your dryer is flashing a code, our error-code guides explain what it means.
Twice a year for most households — more often if you do frequent laundry, have pets, or have a long duct run.
