First, the honest part: most dryers are worth repairing, and a repair is almost always cheaper than a replacement — start with our repair-or-replace guide. But if yours is genuinely past its life, here’s how to choose a new one without overpaying for features you won’t use.

Electric, gas, or heat-pump?

  • Electric — needs a 240V outlet; lower upfront cost.
  • Gas — needs a gas line; costs more upfront but is usually cheaper to run and dries faster.
  • Heat-pump (ventless) — very efficient and needs no vent, so it can go anywhere; gentler, longer cycles and a higher price.

Important: buy the fuel type that matches your hookup — you can’t put a gas dryer where there’s only a 240V outlet, or vice versa, without adding the right utility.

Match it to your washer

Pick a dryer capacity at least as large as your washer so a full wash load fits. A moisture sensor (auto-dry) is the one feature worth insisting on — it prevents over-drying, saves energy, and is easier on clothes.

Dryer features vs gimmicks

Steam de-wrinkle and a good lint system are useful. Wi-Fi and app control rarely justify the cost or the extra electronics. Whatever you choose, plan to keep the vent clear — it’s the #1 cause of dryer repairs.
