GE dryers use a small set of “E” codes, almost all tied to temperature and airflow. Here’s what each GE dryer error code means, what to try first, and when to call a technician.

GE dryer error codes at a glance

Code What it means What to try
E3 Overheating / thermistor (clean the vent!) Clean the lint screen and vent; don’t use until cleared
E1 Temperature thermistor failed Check the thermistor connections; may need replacing
E2 Thermistor wiring short Inspect the wiring harness to the control board

Reset after an E-code: unplug 30 seconds, then reconnect. Codes vary by model.

The most common codes — and how to fix them

E3 — overheating

The dryer overheated and shut down for safety — almost always a restricted vent. Try first: clean the lint screen and fully clear the vent system. Don’t keep using it until the vent is clear.

E1 / E2 — temperature sensor

The thermistor has failed (E1) or its wiring is shorted (E2). Try first: a 30-second power reset; if the code returns, the sensor connections or thermistor need a technician.

One safety note: a clogged lint screen or vent is the #1 cause of dryer error codes — and a real fire risk. Clearing it often fixes the code outright; see our maintenance guide for how.

The bottom line

Most dryer codes come down to a clogged vent or an inexpensive part (a thermal fuse, thermistor, or heating element) — repairing is almost always cheaper than replacing. If a code won’t clear, we repair GE dryers (and Hotpoint) (and every major brand) across DFW, usually same-day. Not sure yours is worth fixing? See our dryer repair-or-replace guide.
