First, the honest part: most washers are worth repairing, and a repair is almost always cheaper than a replacement — start with our repair-or-replace guide. But if yours is genuinely past its life, here’s how to choose a new one without overpaying for features you won’t use.

Pick the type

  • Front-load — best cleaning and water/energy efficiency, and stackable with a dryer. Leave the door open between loads to prevent odor.
  • HE top-load (no agitator) — large capacity and gentle, with easy loading.
  • Agitator top-load — the most affordable and familiar; shorter cycles, a bit rougher on fabrics.

Match the capacity

4.5–5.0 cu ft handles most families and fits a comforter; smaller homes do fine with ~4 cu ft. If you’re buying a dryer too, match their capacities so a full wash load fits the dryer.

Washer features worth it — and gimmicks

A good warranty, a stainless tub, and steam/sanitize cycles are useful. Wi-Fi and dozens of specialty cycles look nice but rarely get used — and every added electronic feature is one more thing that can need repair down the road.

Check the fit

Measure the space (and the doorway), confirm hot/cold hookups and drain height, and if stacking, buy a matching stack kit.
