817-900-8324Samsung refrigerators show a code when something’s wrong — and one of the most common (“OF OF”) isn’t a fault at all. Here’s what each Samsung fridge error code means, what to try first, and when to call a technician.
| Code | What it means | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| OF OF / O FF | Demo / cooling-off mode (NOT a fault) | Exit demo: hold Energy Saver + Freezer (or Power Cool + Power Freeze) ~3–8s |
| 22E / 22C | Fridge evaporator-fan fault (often frost) | Manual defrost; clear vents; check the fan |
| 21E | Freezer-fan fault | Manual defrost frost buildup; check the fan |
| 1E / 5E | Defrost-sensor fault | Usually needs service (sensor) |
| 39E / 39C | Ice-maker fault | Reset the ice maker; check for ice jams |
| 41E / 41C | Communication error (after a power outage) | Restart the fridge (unplug 5 min) |
Codes vary by model — check your manual if yours isn’t listed.
The fridge is in demo/showroom mode — lights work but cooling is off. Try first: hold Energy Saver + Freezer (or Power Cool + Power Freeze on some models) for 3–8 seconds until it beeps. No repair needed — this is the #1 “my Samsung fridge stopped cooling” surprise.
An evaporator or freezer fan can’t spin freely, usually from frost buildup. Try first: a manual defrost and clearing the vents. See also fridge not cooling.
A defrost-sensor problem. This typically needs a technician to test and replace the sensor.
The control boards lost communication, often right after a power outage. Try first: unplug for 5 minutes to restart; if it returns, it needs service.
Good news on the fan/frost codes: many (Er FF/rF, 22E, SY EF) are caused by frost choking the fan, and a manual defrost — unplug the fridge with the doors open for ~8–24 hours, towels down — clears them without any parts. If it returns after that, the fan or a cooling component needs a look.
Most fridge codes point to a fan, a sensor, a defrost part, or are just a status message — and a manual defrost or reset clears many of them. When a part is involved, repairing is almost always cheaper than replacing (a sealed-system or compressor failure on an older unit is the main exception). If a code won’t clear, we repair Samsung refrigerators (and every major brand) across DFW, usually same-day. Not sure yours is worth fixing? See our refrigerator repair-or-replace guide.
