LG refrigerators flash an “Er” code when something’s wrong — many of them fan-related and often fixable with a defrost. Here’s what each LG fridge error code means, what to try first, and when to call a technician.

LG refrigerator error codes at a glance

Code What it means What to try
Er FF Freezer-fan fault (often frost) Manual defrost ~8h (unplug, doors open); then it may clear
Er rF Fridge-fan fault Same manual defrost approach
Er IF Ice-maker-fan fault Manual defrost; check the ice fan
Er dH Defrost-heater fault Needs service
Er CF Condenser-fan fault Needs service
Er CO Communication error Reset (unplug a few min); may need service

Codes vary by model — check your manual if yours isn’t listed.

The most common codes — and how to fix them

Er FF / Er rF — fan error

The freezer (FF) or fridge (rF) fan is blocked, almost always by frost. Try first: unplug with the doors open for ~8 hours to fully defrost (towels down), then plug back in and give it 24–48 hours. See also fridge not cooling.

Er dH — defrost heater

The defrost heater isn’t bringing the coils up to temperature in time. There’s no DIY fix — this one needs a technician.

Er CF — condenser fan

The condenser fan (back/bottom) isn’t reporting proper operation. This needs service to check the fan and wiring.

Er IF — ice fan

The ice-compartment fan is blocked or faulty. Try first: a manual defrost; if it returns, the fan needs service.

Good news on the fan/frost codes: many (Er FF/rF, 22E, SY EF) are caused by frost choking the fan, and a manual defrost — unplug the fridge with the doors open for ~8–24 hours, towels down — clears them without any parts. If it returns after that, the fan or a cooling component needs a look.

The bottom line

Most fridge codes point to a fan, a sensor, a defrost part, or are just a status message — and a manual defrost or reset clears many of them. When a part is involved, repairing is almost always cheaper than replacing (a sealed-system or compressor failure on an older unit is the main exception). If a code won’t clear, we repair LG refrigerators (and every major brand) across DFW, usually same-day. Not sure yours is worth fixing? See our refrigerator repair-or-replace guide.
