It’s one of the most common refrigerator complaints — and one of the most confusing: the freezer is rock-solid cold, but the fridge compartment is warm. Before you panic about a dead refrigerator, know that this specific symptom almost always points to an airflow problem, and most of the causes are inexpensive to fix.
In most modern refrigerators, there’s only one set of cooling coils (the evaporator), and they live in the freezer. A fan blows cold air from the freezer up into the fridge compartment through a vent. So if the freezer is cold but the fridge isn’t, it’s usually not that the fridge “stopped cooling” — it’s that cold air isn’t making it from the freezer into the fridge.
If it cools normally after a manual defrost but the problem comes back in a few days, the defrost system or fan needs to be repaired.
Diagnosing which component failed (fan vs. defrost heater vs. control board vs. damper) usually takes a meter and some teardown. Our techs handle this every day — see refrigerator not cooling, and weigh the repair with our refrigerator repair-or-replace guide.
Usually no — a fan, defrost heater, thermostat, or damper is an inexpensive part. The costly exception is a sealed-system/compressor problem, which is rare for this particular symptom.
