GE washers (and GE-built Hotpoint and Haier models) show a short code when something’s wrong — and many are quick fixes you can do yourself. Here’s what each GE washing-machine error code means, what to try first, and when to call a technician.

GE washer error codes at a glance

Code What it means What to try
H2O Water supply / fill problem Open the supply valve fully; unkink the hose; clean the inlet screen
E22 Fill timeout (too slow to fill) Check the water supply, hoses, and inlet valve
E2 / E23 Won’t drain Clear the drain hose; check the pump and filter
LE Lid won’t lock Close the lid fully; clear debris near the latch
UE Unbalanced load Redistribute the laundry; make sure the washer is level
E31 Water-level / pressure-sensor fault Check sensor connections; may need service
E38 Dispenser fault Check the dispenser linkage and motor
LOCKED Control lock is on Hold the control-lock button to turn it off

Codes vary by model — check your manual if yours isn’t listed.

The most common codes — and how to fix them

H2O / E22 — won’t fill

The washer isn’t getting enough water. Try first: make sure the supply valves are fully open, the hoses aren’t kinked, and the inlet screens are clean. Still stuck? See washer won’t fill.

E2 / E23 — won’t drain

The washer can’t drain in time. Try first: clear the drain hose and check the pump/filter for clogs. Still stuck? See washer won’t drain.

LE — lid won’t lock

The washer can’t confirm the lid is locked. Try first: close the lid fully and clear any debris around the latch; unplug for a minute to reset. Still stuck? The lid-lock assembly may need replacing.

UE — unbalanced load

The drum can’t balance the load to spin. Try first: redistribute the laundry and confirm the machine is level. Recurring? See washer won’t spin.

The bottom line

Most GE washer codes come down to an inexpensive part or a simple blockage — repairing is almost always cheaper than replacing. If a code won’t clear, we repair GE washers (and every major brand) across DFW, usually same-day. Not sure yours is worth fixing? See our washer repair-or-replace guide.
