Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Maytag, Amana, and Jenn-Air dishwashers share the same control platform, so they use the same F#E# fault codes (older models flash the Clean light instead). Many are simple, do-it-yourself fixes. Here’s what each code means, what to try first, and when to call a technician.

Whirlpool & KitchenAid dishwasher error codes at a glance

Code What it means What to try
F2E1 Stuck control button Check each button on the panel; free any that stick
F2E2 Control / keypad communication Reset: cut power for 1 minute
F6E1 / F6E3 / F6E4 Won’t fill Check the water supply is on and the inlet hose/valve; may need a valve
F7E2 Drain fault Clear the drain hose and filter of clogs
F8E1 / F8E2 / F8E4 Water-flow / wash-system fault Check water pressure and supply; may need service
F9E1 / F9E2 Won’t drain Clear the drain blockage; drain pump may need service
F10E4 / FAE4 Overflow detected Stop the cycle; this one needs service
Clean light flashing Blink-pattern code (no display) Count the blinks; run the diagnostic cycle

Codes vary by model — check your manual if yours isn’t listed.

The most common codes — and how to fix them

F6E1 — won’t fill

The dishwasher isn’t getting water. Try first: confirm the under-sink supply valve is fully open and the inlet hose isn’t kinked. Still stuck? The inlet valve may need replacing.

F9E1 — won’t drain

The dishwasher couldn’t drain. Try first: clean the filter and clear the drain hose; if it’s a new install, remove the garbage-disposal knockout plug. Still stuck? See dishwasher not draining.

F2E2 — control / keypad

A control-panel communication glitch. Try first: cut power at the breaker for a full minute to reset. Returns? The control panel may need service.

F8E4 — wash-system / flow

A water-flow or wash-system problem. Try first: check water pressure and that the spray arms turn freely. This one often needs a technician.

The bottom line

Most dishwasher error codes come down to a clogged filter, a kinked hose, or an inexpensive part — repairing is almost always cheaper than replacing. If a code won’t clear, we repair Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Maytag and Jenn-Air dishwashers (and every major brand) across DFW, usually same-day. Not sure yours is worth fixing?
