Because Electrolux owns Frigidaire, both brands use the same fridge codes (you’ll see them as either “SY” or “5Y” depending on the display). Here’s what each means, what to try first, and when to call a technician.

Frigidaire & Electrolux refrigerator error codes at a glance

Code What it means What to try
SY EF / 5Y EF Evaporator-fan fault (airflow) Hard reset; manual defrost if iced; check the fan
SY CE / 5Y CE Communication error (board ↔ display) Unplug 15 min; if it persists, needs service
5Y CF Cooling failure (fridge compartment) Clear the vents; check the sensors/compressor
H1 Freezer sensor shorted Needs service (thermistor)

Codes vary by model — check your manual if yours isn’t listed.

The most common codes — and how to fix them

SY EF — evaporator fan

The evaporator fan isn’t getting enough airflow — usually ice hitting the fan blades. Try first: a hard reset (unplug 5–10 min); if you hear grinding, do a manual defrost (unplug 24h, doors open). See also fridge not cooling.

SY CE — communication error

The control board and display aren’t communicating. Try first: unplug for 15 minutes. If it persists, the main board or user-interface board needs service.

5Y CF — cooling failure

The fridge compartment isn’t cooling. Try first: make sure the vents aren’t blocked by food; if it continues, the sensors or compressor need a look.

H1 — freezer sensor

The freezer sensor (thermistor) has shorted. This needs a technician to test and replace the sensor.

Good news on the fan/frost codes: many (Er FF/rF, 22E, SY EF) are caused by frost choking the fan, and a manual defrost — unplug the fridge with the doors open for ~8–24 hours, towels down — clears them without any parts. If it returns after that, the fan or a cooling component needs a look.

The bottom line

Most fridge codes point to a fan, a sensor, a defrost part, or are just a status message — and a manual defrost or reset clears many of them. When a part is involved, repairing is almost always cheaper than replacing (a sealed-system or compressor failure on an older unit is the main exception). If a code won’t clear, we repair Frigidaire and Electrolux refrigerators (and every major brand) across DFW, usually same-day. Not sure yours is worth fixing?
